History of the Department of Medical Parasitology, Mycology, and Entomology
School of Medicine, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences
The Department of Medical Parasitology, Mycology, and Entomology at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences traces its origins to a section within the Department of Microbiology between 1966 and 1973. In 1973, through the visionary efforts of the late Dr. Hossein Bijan, a prominent professor at the University of Tehran, the department gained its independence, becoming one of the specialized departments of parasitology in Iran’s medical education system.
Since 1986, operating under the School of Medicine, the department has evolved into a national center of excellence in the study and control of parasitic, fungal, and vector-borne diseases. Over the decades, it has trained more than 159 master’s and 53 Ph.D graduated across this department. Thousands of students in Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Public Health, Nutrition, Microbiology, and International programs have benefited from its rigorous academic offerings.
Guided by a legacy of distinguished faculty, including 13 current members comprising professors, associate professors, and assistant professors, the department remains committed to its core mission: advancing knowledge, training the next generation of specialists, and protecting public health against infectious threats.
